Jesus is born

Luke 2; 1-40

Jesus is born. A tiny baby who would change the world. When I wasn’t a parent, I didn’t give much thought to the magnitude of what happened when Mary was giving birth in a manager, when she had to travel to keep her child safe when He was so small.  As a mother you look at your little child and you wonder what will they be, how will they make me laugh and smile and melt my heart. How will I convince them and show them how to help others and change the world? Then there was Mary, her baby was someone so special.  Did she look in His little face and imagine what he would do?  Could she have even begun to think of how His life would affect all of our lives?

I love the lyrics of this song by Mark Lowry:

Mary, did you know

That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God

Mary, did you know?
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the Great I Am

How amazing, Jesus was God’s son but He was also Mary’s baby and before He did all of these things, He was a tiny babe in a manager, in her arms.  She was holding him and comforting Him. There were angels who told the shepherds, the people watching the sheep a lonely, lowly job about this miracle and so they went to see for themselves.  There were the wisemen, who saw it in the stars and traveled far to see this child and to bring gifts for a King.

And there it was a birth, something that happened like all other births, but was so special, it changed the world, it changed us.  God gave us Jesus. Jesus who we can cling to and pray to and thank and worship.  Jesus who is always with us, what an amazing gift. Thank you God.
